Biography
Biologo con più di 35 anni di esperienza nella ricerca applicata alla biologia e alla fisiologia degli organismi acquatici e all’acquacoltura. Capo Area Coordinamento Laboratori, Musei e Servizi Tecnici del Dipartimento di Ingegneria e Responsabile Tecnico del Centro di Ricerche per la Pesca e l’Acquacoltura di Acquatina, dell’Università del Salento. Coordinatore di numerosi progetti di ricerca, sviluppo tecnologico ed innovazione, a livello nazionale ed internazionale, incluso il recente progetto “BIORAS_SHRIMP”, finanziato nell’ambito del Blue Bio Eranet Codund.

Ecological and digital transition in aquaculture: development of a circular model for shrimp farming and additional biomass production
Abstract
The application of circular business models for aquafarming has clear relevance to secure sustainability since waste, by-products and side-products can be recycled, reused, and valorized facilitating a conversion of these resources and waste streams into value added products, such as food, feed, biobased products, and bioenergy. New production methods, like Integrated Multi Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) approach and Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), already integrate principles of circular economy, and together with the application of new digital technologies (such as IoT, big data, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and blockchain), are contributing to modernize the sector, mitigate impacts, improve process efficiency and secure sufficient profitability for farmers. A full circular production system for shrimp and additional biomass circular production, is under development and test in the ongoing Blue Bio Eranet Cofund BIORAS_SHRIMP (www.bioras-shrimp.eu) project.
