Adapt the feed to new fish or fish to the new feed?

Abstract
A proper development of the aquaculture sector implies: (a) an effective replacement of marine ingredients by more sustainable raw materials and (b) a successful breeding program addressed to improve growth, feed utilization and fish health. In this context, the objectives of EU Horizon 2020 project AquaIMPACT (Genomic and nutritional innovations for genetically superior farmed fish to improve efficiency in European aquaculture) was to integrate the fields offish breeding and nutrition to increase the competitiveness of EU’s aquaculture of Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, gilthead seabream and European seabass, to ensure food and nutrition security and to satisfy consumer demands for high-quality seafood with limited environmental impact. The obtained results will be then summarized describing how genotype and novel diets can differently affect growth performance, disease resistance, and intestinal microbial communities of fish, specifically in selected and unselected European seabass.
