Organic aquaculture in the European Union
Abstract
Organic aquaculture has largely grown in the European Union since 2015. Several species are produced under the organic scheme, in particular mussel and salmon, followed by trout, carp, oyster, seabass and seabream. These organic products are notably farmed in Ireland, Italy, France, The Netherlands and Spain.
The presentation provides a state of play of organic aquaculture in the European Union. The main drivers and barriers for the development of organic aquaculture are identified and prospects for growth are detailed. Each analysis differentiates shellfish and finfish.
The presentation is based on a study conducted by EUMOFA in 2022 and updated with the most recent data.
