Performance evaluation of seabream (Sparus aurata) broodstock fed by innovative aquafeed based on new emerging sustainable protein sources
Abstract
Gonadal development and fecundity of marine fish species are greatly affected by broodstock nutrition, and their spawning quality may be increased by improving the nutritional quality of broodstock diets.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the reproductive performance, larval quality, and the welfare of sea bream broodstock (Sparus aurata) fed on experimental diets based on a mix of sustainable and valuable ingredients (microalgae, Nannochloropsis sp; duckweed, Lemna minor; insects, Hermetia hillucens and macroalgae, Alaria esculenta) as total replacement of the vegetable ones. Even if the welfare and fecundity parameters were similar between the experimental and control diets, the integration of alternative ingredients seems to have positively influenced the larval output.
