Fish-PhotoCAT: Photocatalytic water remediation for sustainable fish farming
Abstract
Fish-PhotoCAT, a European project involving Italy, Tunisia, and Egypt, aims at evaluating the efficiency of a “smart” purification system to enhance water quality, fish production, and environmental sustainability in aquaculture systems. Focusing on two crucial fish species, rainbow trout and gilthead seabream, the project employs the remediation of nitrogen compounds and the biocidal action of a titanium dioxide (TiO2)-based photocatalytic treatment. Currently, the system has been successfully tested on rainbow trout, with effectiveness assessed in terms of water quality and fish zootechnical performance. Additionally, in vitro testing of the treatment’s anti-Nodavirus activity has shown promising results.
